David Caruso: CBS Ups CSI Miami to 24 Episodes

What, you say? Don't they always do 24 episodes per season. Quite true, in the past, save the '07-'08 writer's strike season, but the winds have shifted in our struggling economy.

In an apparent belt-tightening move, CBS ordered only 22 episodes of their standing, scripted shows this season, less for new offerings. Now, as the year progresses and the numbers appear to be holding, CBS has ordered two additional episodes for "CSI Miami", "NCIS" and "NCIS LA" (though we wonder how this one would fare as a stand-alone, without parental lead-in), "How I Met Your Mother" and "Two and a Half Men".

Several others have been issued orders for one additional episode, bringing "CSI", "CSI NY", "Criminal Minds", "The Good Wife" (why this one would be included eludes us), "Big Bang Theory" and "The Mentalist" up to 23 each.

"Accidentally on Purpose", Jenna Elfman's in-vogue cougar themed yawner, is up for 5 new episodes, bringing its total to 18.

Meanwhile, "Numb3rs" production has been reduced to 16 episodes, thereby making room for new or returning shows. You think ratings don't count for much? Ask any "Numb3rs" cast or crew member.

Prospects for Season 9 are looking good for Miami, though they lost first place this past Monday to World Series Baseball. And they say baseball is dead. Don't think so.

Ha! There is no show on earth that will beat a major sporting event in our countries. Great to see CSI M holding it's own in the ratings and being deserved of another 2 epis. Yes, the ratings count, especially when the budget is tight. Many shows here have suffered also but i believe the industry in the UK has been very hard hit.

A sluggish economy accounts, in large measure, for all the reality shows. Cheaper to run, good audience.

ugh! Don't get me started on reality shows!

I can remember the last time I sat down and watched a game in it's entirety....It was 1994.

I've heard that Flashpoint may be taking over Numb3rs's timeslot. While I really like Flashpoint, I'm also hoping that Numb3rs isn't going to be cancelled.

I've heard the same. Could never get into Numb3rs, liked Flashpoint in their premiere but my enthusiam waned quickly.

I found the premise of Flashpoint interesting when I first heard about it, but it became must-see for me when I learned that Amy Jo Johnson was in the cast.
